What's it like to be a Supply Planner?
Overview
Regardless of which industry, all companies need equipment, whether it is to produce goods or plan their services. They need to plan for the quantity, quality, and storage of the equipment and these tasks are managed by supply planners. They maintain the inventory of their company’s equipment and plan for future products. A supply planner spends time at manufacturing plants and with vendors to get these products. They anticipate future demand of items for their company and make purchases accordingly. Without supply planners, most companies would not be able to function.
Requirements
Most supply planners have a bachelor's degree in areas such as business management or supply chain. Some continue their education by getting a masters degree. However, there are no specific requirements for supply planners, it all depends on the companies. This career is more of an on-the-job training career that allows for individuals to come with no prior experience and still advance in the industry.
What Can High Schoolers Do?
- Take business classes at school or community college
- Go shopping and try to find good deals on items you would normally buy for more
- Take a class in business, procurement, or supply chain
