The basics

What's it like to be a Software qa engineer?

Overview

A software quality assurance (QA) engineer monitors the development process of software their company plans to launch and ensures the software design is up to standards. They help their team prevent software delays by dividing up the development process into smaller stages. A software QA engineer checks the software for bugs, documents the progress before release, identifies potential problems by researching the software features, and develops possible solutions before launching the application. They have strong skills in technology, communication, time management, and can seamlessly work in a group setting. Essentially, these engineers make sure that the quality of their team’s products are up to their company’s standards.

Requirements

Software QA engineers usually have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software design, or engineering. Interning provides valuable experience, so engineers tend to work during their years in college. There is no licensing necessary, but since technology is a rapidly developing field, engineers tend to stay up-to-date with new software advancements through courses, certifications, and exams.
