Overview
Computer engineers design, assess, and maintain different hardware and software systems within a computer. Computer engineers that specialize in hardware focus on researching and developing the computer systems as well as processors or routers. Ones that focus on software spend their time doing the same with software systems such as improving the speed or altering the operating system. They are excellent problem solvers, communicate effectively, and have leadership skills. Many work in manufacturing offices or in research labs.
Requirements
Computer engineers tend to have a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering or a related field such as electrical engineering or computer science. Higher education such as a master’s degree in these fields is helpful for higher-end jobs. These degrees must be certified by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET) and many students try to intern during their college years to gain more experience. Another way to become a computer engineer is by seeking an associate’s degree in computer engineering or science for 2 years to enter the workforce more quickly compared to other degrees.
