The basics

What's it like to be an Artist?

Overview

An artist creates original works of beauty such as paintings or sculptures and sells them to potential customers. They might draw cartoons, make pottery, or create pictures all depending on what area of art they focus on. The majority of artists are self-employed and passionate about the art they create. Many hold an additional job aside from art, but it all depends on what the person wants to do. Artists are creative people with extraordinary artistic skill that allows them to grow and build on their art style.

Requirements

An artist improves their skill through practice, repetition, and experience. Many hold a degree in Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), or even in Bachelor of Science (BS) in Art, but there are no specific requirements for this field. Artists need to gain experience by continually creating art and trying different styles, so some may train with experienced artists to learn from them or attend workshops and classes. Advancements in the field typically come from reputation, so putting out more original pieces and expanding one's portfolio is the way to go.
